As part of G20 and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Goa Science Centre and Planetarium, Miramar, along with the Ministry of Culture is observing Zero Shadow Day on May 2, 2023 at the Goa Science Centre, Miramar.
Zero Shadow Day (ZSD) is the day when the sun rises at true east and sets at true west. It is a bi-annual phenomenon when the sun is exactly overhead and the shadow of any object disappears for a short while.
Zero Shadow Day is different for different places on earth. In India, it is usually observed around April and September. This phenomenon, which occurs twice a year, will once again be observed on August 11, 2023 at 12.40 pm.
This year, there will be almost no visible shadow at exactly 12:32 pm on May 2, 2023 in Panjim. This is because the sun will be at its zenith on top of the city.
Goa Science Centre & Planetarium will organise demos on the concept of Zero Shadow Day.
The programme is open to students as well as the general public who can witness this event at the centre between 12.15 am to 12.40 pm.
