FRENCH NEW WAVE FILM, CLEO FROM 5 TO 7

Goa’s Cinephile Film Club is all set to host the screening of the 1962-French new wave film, Cléo from 5 to 7, directed by the legendary Agnès Varda.

The screening will take place on June 6, 2024, at the Maquinez Palace in Panjim. Running for 90 minutes, the film will be presented with English subtitles.

The film is set in real time where Cléo (Corinne Marchand) has to wait for the test results of her biopsy. She walks around the streets of Paris, which is stunningly captured by Varda.

The film deals with various themes like existentialism and mortality from a strong feminine viewpoint.

Cléo from 5 to 7 was Varda's second feature and she was one of the pioneers of the French new wave, and the only woman, among other illustrious male directors.

It wasn't long before she cemented her place as one of the all-time greats in cinema.

When Varda passed away in 2019, at the age of 90, top Hollywood filmmaker, Martin Scorsese, called her one of the ‘Gods of cinema’.

The Cinephile Film Club’s Sachin Chatte, who recently followed the footsteps of Cléo, and traced her journey, will introduce the film, followed by a photo feature and discussion after the screening.

Registrations for membership of the Cinephile Film Club is open at www.esg.co.in.

UNDERSTANDING GOA'S ECOLOGY THROUGH RITUALS AND FESTIVALS

The Centre for Study of Mythology and Culture presents ‘Understanding Goa's Ecology Through Rituals and Festivals’ on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Institute Menezes Braganza, Panjim, North Goa.

The resource person for the talk is journalist Arti Das, and the event is open to the general public.

Goa, renowned for its distinct culture and traditions is also a hub of ecological biodiversity, which is vividly portrayed in the rituals and festivals of the region.

These cultural events serve as a window into the significance and contribution of ecology and biodiversity in our lives, showcasing how our ancestors recognised their importance.

This lecture will delve into the rituals and festivals that directly reflect this philosophy, emphasising the importance of promoting this aspect. Additionally, it will shed light on imminent threats to our biodiversity and its associated elements.

Arti Das is a freelance journalist based in Goa, and also spends time documenting and blogging about trees, as well as organising tree walks.
