If art and history fascinates you, then here is an interesting talk entitled ‘Christian Art and Stories from a Convent’, that takes you back into Goa’s past. The talk has been organized by the Museum of Goa (MOG), Pilerne, Goa.
The curator of the Museum of Christian Art (MoCA), Old Goa, Natasha Fernandes and acclaimed writer and heritage activist of Goa, Heta Pandit will share insights during the session.
About the talk
The talk, which will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2022, from 11.30 am onwards, will focus on how the Convent of Santa Monica, located on the Holy Hill, Old Goa, was once Asia's first and the largest convent, and was able to accommodate over 100 nuns at one point.
Through the ‘Christian Art and Stories from a Convent’ talk, one can also learn the role of women, who sought admission to the convent with great zeal and enthusiasm.
One can also trace how this convent faced decline by the 19th century and ceased to be a cloistered space.
Being the capital of the Portuguese Estado da India, the city of Old Goa has many stories to narrate, and the two speakers will provide an assortment of interesting elements that could help one construct the history of Old Goa.
The talk will conclude with the current use of the convent in the 21st century, housing the Museum of Christian Art and playing an important role as an educational institute for nuns.
