The Global ‘Save Soil’ movement, led by the founder of the Isha Foundation, Sadhguru, has reached Goa. The event will be held on August 23, 2022 at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Bambolim.
The 'Save Soil' movement is aimed at addressing various concerns and crises related to soil. With the aim of bringing people and leaders together, the idea of the campaign is to help increase the organic content in cultivable soil, which would, in effect, be a way of standing up for soil health.
Research and findings
According to a study by the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 2 billion people suffer from nutritional deficiencies, which is an alarming figure. Also, a study by NCBI stated that the average mineral content of calcium, magnesium and iron in cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and spinach had dropped 80-90% between 1914 and 2018 in the United States.
And, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) states that soil degradation will causes a loss of $235 billion to $577 billion in crop productivity every year.
These are just some of the cases studies which led to the acceleration of this movement.
Behind the movement
Sadhguru, who has travelled on a 30,000 km bike tour from London to India for the 'Save Soil' campaign will make his way to Goa tomorrow.
He started his journey on March 21,2022, at Parliament Square in London and travelled through Europe and the Middle East before finally reaching India.
The idea behind the campaign is to advocate policies across all nations towards soil restoration and an imminent crisis among 3.5 billion people to garner their support for these policies.
