Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts in association with Abhivyaktee – Panaji celebrates World Theatre Day 2024 with a Konkani production, Sopon Sot, to be staged over two days, April 6 and 7, 2024, from 7 pm onwards.

Sopon Sot invites the audience to imagine a world with no limits, boxes and boundaries. Veering away from the systems that society binds us to, this play delves into the limitless possibilities that unfurl when we step out of our confines.

A Konkani play incorporating elements from traditional theatre forms popular in GoaSopon Sot looks at a world beyond gender, caste and social hierarchies.

Director Dr Saish Deshpande says the subject of Sopon Sot is very close to his heart and reflects the sentiment of every child dreaming of nurturing the artist in him.

"In the production, I have tried incorporating the elements of two of the most popular traditional theatre forms in Goa namely Zomnivoille Khell and Sangeet Natak and have designed the presentation in the format of Sangeet-Khell (musical–drama), he informs.

He observes, "Education (formal as well as informal) is to aid children to learn and encourage them to think about what they learn. All of our performing art forms serve as necessary tools for imparting education and our National Education Policy too is in the process of implementing them."

Sopon Sot is dedicated to all the creative children who while being educated, dare to dream, he adds.

World Theatre Day is celebrated the world over by International Theatre Institute (ITI) Centres and the International Theatre Community on March 27 every year.

This was initiated in 1961 by the ITI. Various national and international theatre events are organised to mark this occasion.

One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace.
