There will be a concert of sacred music, titled ‘Ave Maria’, presented by a choir and orchestra, conducted by the renowned Fr Romeo Monteiro. Twelve sublime choral compositions in 6 languages will be on the repertoire.

The conductor, Fr Romeo Monteiro, has extensive experience in the field of sacred music and is currently the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Goa & Daman, as well as the Director of the Department of Western Music, Kala Academy Goa.

‘Ave Maria’ is the salutation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary, a young girl from Nazareth, chosen by God to send Jesus into the world. This salutation, along with the popular prayer of supplication –Sancta Maria – is perhaps the most popular prayer of Catholics. The concert revolves around this greeting, the starting point of the Incarnation of Christ.

At the concert, 45 singers and 22 musicians will perform compositions in Latin, Aramaic, Russian, Greek, Sanskrit and Konkani.

The repertoire will include:

  • Chaire Maria (Ave Maria in Greek) composed by Fr Romeo Monteiro

  • Ave Maria composed by Arcadelt-Dietsch

  • Ave Maria composed by Joseph Haydn

  • Shlom Lech Maryam (Ave Maria in Aramaic, the language in which Mary heard the angelic salutation) arranged by Fr Romeo Monteiro

  • Ave Maria composed by Domenico Bartolucci

  • Namaste Maryame (Ave Maria in Sanskrit, based on Vedic traditional chant) composed by Romeo Monteiro

  • Bogoroditse Djevo (Ave Maria in Russian, according to the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church) composed by Serjei Rachmaninoff

  • Ave Maria composed by Caesar Franck

  • Noman Mariê (Ave Maria in Konkani) composed by Fr Romeo Monteiro

  • Ave Maria (with boy soprano voices) composed by Fr Romeo Monteiro

  • Ave Maria composed by Bach-Gounod, arranged by Fr Romeo Monteiro

  • March 19, 2023: Penha de França Church, Britona (6.30 pm)

  • March 22, 2023: Our Lady of Succour and Good Success, Nagoa de Verna (6.30 pm)

  • March 25, 2023: Santa Monica Convent Church, Old Goa (6.45 pm)
