Two exciting events are happening this Wednesday in Goa – the first is an interactive session on snakes; and the second is a book reading connected with a fascinating story from Greek mythology.

EXPLORING SNAKES

Dive into the fascinating world of snakes at a session which will be held at McGoa Holidays, Arpora, on July 24, 2024.

Following an interactive session with snake rescuer, Aaron Fernandes, a short documentary on snakes will be screened.

Aaron Fernandes is a conservationist, artist and wildlife rescuer with a specific interest in herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians), and works with snakebite mitigation in addition to addressing the human-snake conflict situation.

His interest in snakebites is intertwined with India’s myth, superstition, religion and folklore, making for an interesting conversation about our perceptions of these mysterious animals.

Aaron is a resident of Siolim and a founding member of the Chameleon Wildlife organisation, with activities in Goa and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

BOOK DISCUSSION @ CREMEUX

The Out-of-Context Book Club is hosting a book discussion on the novel, Circe, by Madeline Miller on July 24, 2024, at Café Cremeux, MG Road, Panjim.

Circe is an adaptation of various Greek myths, most notably Odyssey, narrated through the eyes of Circe, banished daughter of Helios the Sun God.

Considered worthless from birth, Circe is neglected by her parents and bullied by her siblings. She suddenly discovers her gift for ‘pharmika’ or magic of herbs by accident.

One thing leads to another, and she ends up being exiled to the desolate island of Aiaia. From there on, Circe’s life goes through a series of ups and downs, such as her encounter with Odysseus, and then, his son Telemachus.

The story deals with themes of power, patriarchy and misogyny, and above all the universal need for love and then, letting go. The story has a surprise ending!
