Rice is an inseparable part of Goa and Goans. With the South-westerly monsoons behind us, paddy cultivation and related activities are practically coming to an end at this time of year.
So, it’s time to celebrate Goa’s staple grain – rice – with the ‘Harvest Festival’ at the ‘Made In Saligao Market’ in Saligao this Tuesday, Oct 31, 2023.
The aim of the ‘Harvest Festival’ is to recognise and appreciate the hard work put in by farmers who toil in their paddy fields to ensure that the local populace has their essential daily dose of rice.
As part of the event, local varieties of rice, rice-based sweets and savouries, and everything rice will be showcased.
Back in the day, even sweet dishes in Goa were prepared using rice as a key ingredient, and were served warm or cold. Some of these traditional sweet eats which will be available at the festival are pudde, patolyeo, shirvoyo, kheer, sakarbhaath, sanna, appam, idli, methyechi pez, godshem, fov, chirmule laddoo, rice laddoo, chapati, pinagr, manos and koiloeio to name a few.
As part of the event, a short information session on rice will also be held from 5 pm to 5.30 pm.
The ‘Made In Saligao Market’ will also have the regular elements such as the pop-up market featuring handmade products, handicrafts, snacks, games, live music, open mic session, kids’ entertainment zone, dancing spot, seating etc.
