THE OLD AND THE NEW CONQUESTS OF GOA

Get some insight into Goa during the centuries gone by at a talk to be held at Fundação Oriente, Panjim, Goa on August 17, 2024.

‘The Old and the New Conquests of Goa (16th -18th centuries): New insights on Land and Law’ is a talk featuring experts Roger Lee de Jesus (Leibniz University, Hannover, Germany) and Kaustubh Somnath Naik (University of Pennsylvania, USA).

Roger Lee de Jesus will share his thoughts on villages, land and gaunkars in the Old Conquests of Goa (16th -17th centuries), while Kaustubh Somnath Naik (University of Pennsylvania, USA) will speak about ‘Rethinking New Conquests - Land, law and language in 18th century Portuguese Goa.

The creation of Goa as a territory of the Portuguese empire underwent different phases and geographies.

In the middle of the 18th century, the New Conquests were added to the Old Conquests, which had been incorporated in the 16th century, greatly expanding Goa's borders and its social diversity.

This talk aims to examine this territory and its evolution in terms of its connection with land and law.

The talk will explore new insights and approaches to these issues, demonstrating how archival sources can be used to rethink the colonial period and understand the social and cultural interactions between local and Portuguese institutions.

Analysing these aspects will demonstrate how crucial they are for comprehending the historical evolution of Goa across the centuries, and the socio-cultural transformations of early modern colonialism.
