Sunshine is a state of mind. It’s about soaking in the sun by the beach, getting a serotonin boost after a good workout, or dancing with friends till sunrise- it is the essence of Goa!
And, bringing an additional dose of sunshine to Anjuna, Atiya Rakyan and Aliya Rashid said, “Hello Sunshine,” to their new café one evening in March 2023.
THE START
Inspiration works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it’s fueled by blood, sweat and tears; other times, it’s healthy food, meaningful connections, and good intentions that make the world a brighter place.
"We wanted to create a community space that serves fresh, healthy dishes for an all-day breakfast experience," begins Aliya.
As for the name, "Atiya came up with it. The idea was to create a place that was happy and welcoming, something that brought a smile to people’s faces as soon as they entered," she adds.
Like most beginnings, this one was exciting, too.
"We were fortunate with our location, right on a busy main road. It was the perfect time to open, and we had put together a menu we believed in. We listened to our guests, learned what they liked and didn’t like, and constantly innovated," Atiya shares.
"The best specials now have a permanent spot on our menu. It was a time of learning and building relationships, and now, many of our clients are regulars," she smiles.
Describing the interiors of the café, there's an abundance of sunflowers, large windows, greenery and ample seating space. In short, almost every corner of the cafe is aesthetically pleasing and infused with cheerful positivity and shades of yellow.
But, taking full credit for the success of their café is something that the duo shies away from.
And, quick to give credit and acknowledge the hard work of their team, they say, ‘Today, Chef Abigail leads the kitchen with great maturity. She’s a talented chef and an excellent team leader.’"
MENU TALK
The menu features a wide selection of globally-inspired dishes and crowd favourites.
"We have smoothie bowls, classic breakfast dishes like chia cups and overnight oats, and a brunch and lunch selection that includes sandwiches, wraps, burritos and Buddha bowls. For those with a sweet tooth, there are delicious waffles, pancakes, crepes, and all kinds of cakes and brownies," Atiya explains.
Aliya adds, "We’re always adding seasonal items- mangoes in the summer and strawberries in the winter for some amazing desserts. We also have an extensive coffee menu, featuring coffee from Marc’s Coffee in Auroville, along with fresh juices, shakes and smoothies."
While everyone has their own favourites, some of the bestsellers at Hello Sunshine include the Messy Mexican, Turkish Eggs, Avocado and Sundried Tomato Sandwich, Falafel Wrap, Pancake Stack with Maple Syrup, and Nutella hazelnut crepe.
Not just that, the coffee at Hello Sunshine has also developed a loyal following with guests returning almost every second day for their cup.
Memories are meant to be cherished, and the duo keeps special ones close to their hearts.
"We’ve hosted wonderful events that bring the local community together- yoga sessions, breathwork classes. But, our 'Baking for Kids' events are our favourites. Watching little ones learn to bake and enjoy making their own desserts is really special for us," they say with a content smile.
Looking ahead, "We’re expanding our current café by extending the terrace to add a whole new seating area up in our treehouse. But, a dream would be to see Hello Sunshine in South Goa one day, maybe by the beach!" hopes Atiya.
Slowly but surely is the path that Atiya and Aliya have chosen. And just like sunflowers following the sun, they are delighted to be on this sun-kissed journey- happy, content, and soaking up every moment of sunshine.
