Delightful flavours of the Far East in Goa

If Pan-Asian cuisine is your weakness, the newly-opened Bomblii restaurant in the heart of Panjim is a treat for the palate

Good food makes life so much better! No wonder, then, that restaurants serving delicious fare and new cuisines are popular.

While Goa’s beach belt is noted for its varied restaurants, the capital city has seen quite a number of food outlet coming up in recent years, one of the newest being Bomblii in the heart of the capital.

A TASTE OF THE EAST

Bomblii (navel in Konkani), a Pan-Asian restaurant, opened up in Panjim around a fortnight ago.

The owner, Joseph Dias, who has been in the hospitality sector for several years, had opened a restaurant, called Bombil, in Campal, Panjim, in 2019. And, seeing its popularity, wanted to make Bomblii a ‘go-to’ restaurant for exotic flavours of the Far East.

The aquatic themed interior décor of Bomblii was planned by Joseph himself, while the thematic murals were painted by John Fernandes from Margao.

Shell-shaped and coconut frond lampshades with subdued lighting and an aquarium added to the aquatic elements as I settled down to check out the well-listed menu over a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from Jacob’s Creek, which paired very well with the seafood and red meat.

The menu had an extensive selection of dishes, of which, Popaiah Jo Spring Rolls, stuffed with glass noodles, and accompanied by a delicious Orange Chilli Plum Sauce; and Kalamari with Sesame Seeds set the pace of my evening at Bomblii.

The soup section listed Chicken Dumplings, Flat Noodles and Roast Pork; Vietnamese Egg Drop for vegetarians, had with red peppers and vinegar with roasted sticky rice.

Larb Gai – a salad with basil with the flavour of lime and chicken or vegetarian options – had a distinct taste. The Garlic Pepper Fry and Asian Greens in Coconut Indonesian Chilli Sauce, Pepper Garlic Sauce, Roasted Chilli and Orange Plum Sauce lent the piquance a delicious taste.

Mushroom-stuffed Bao Vegetable Pot Stickers, Bangkok Style Phad Thai, Pork Chilli, Dim Sum, Roasted Duck in Sesame Garlic Chopped Shallots detailed the meal.

I was quite stuffed, but contemplated on the desserts listed – my choice being the unusual Doryaki (Japanese) Red Beans and Dates Stuffed Pancake with Ice-Cream.

Khao Nio Sticky Rice Mango and Green Tea with Coconut Milk, Chestnut Rubies with Sweetened Coconut Milk and Rambutans were my hot favourites. Fried Ice-Cream with Chocolate Sauce was also delicious-sounding, and I decided to pig out on the desserts on my next visit.

As we sipped on the wine, Joseph informed me that the cuisine was modified to suit the Indian palate – the chilli could be a tad bit toned down, though, and let the sauces add the required piquancy.
