The 4th edition of the All Goa Inter-Collegiate/HSS Tiatr Competition 2024-25 was held recently, with the participation of six institutions from across the state.
Of these, four colleges were from North Goa (DCT’s SS Dempo College of Commerce & Economics, Cujira; St Xavier’s College, Mapusa; Fr Agnel College, Pilar; and Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Pilar) and two colleges were from South Goa (Carmel College of Arts, Science & Commerce for Women, Nuvem; and Rosary College of Commerce & Arts, Navelim).
The event was organised by the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) in collaboration with Kala Academy Goa, Panjim.
ABOUT THE ENTRIES
The opening tiatr of the competition, Uddtta To Buddtta, by DCT’s SS Dempo College of Commerce & Economics, Cujira, focused on the dictum ‘Pride has a fall’.
Written and directed by Antonet de Sousa, it laid stress on how one climbs the ladder of success by making an entry in tiatrs, and then, in films. But, once he gains name and fame, there’s no end to his success story, which ultimately results in his downfall due to sheer pride.
The second day witnessed the tiatr, Chuk Konnachi?, staged by Carmel College of Arts, Science & Commerce for Women, Nuvem, written and directed by Fr Doel Dias.
It focused on an orphan who is in search of her guardians, and when she finds them, the re-union is beautifully presented in the concluding scene.
Chitrkar, a tiatr presented by St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, was staged on the third day of the competition. Written and directed by Fr Luis Gomes, it focused on the passion that youth have in them, and how it gets hampered due to unwanted pressure from parents pursuing their dreams.
The fourth day of the competition bore witness to the tiatr, Nivolkantto, written by Fr Roman Rodrigues, directed by Gautam Gawde and presented by the Rosary College of Commerce & Arts, Navelim.
It laid stress on the job opportunities which can be created by unemployed youth in Goa, instead of seeking greener pastures abroad.
The tiatr, Moga Mhaka Moguch Puro, written by Fr Milton Rodrigues, directed by Shantaram Pawar and presented by Fr Agnel College, Pilar, focused on staying true to your beloved even in adverse situations.
It also highlighted infidelity in marriage and meddling in-laws, which can hamper married life.
The concluding tiatr, Romeo Juliet, written by Efifanio Mendes, directed by Madhuri Shetkar and presented by Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Pilar, was about the abuse of freedom by college-going students and the consequences they have to bear when things get out of hand.
The subjects picked up by the colleges were quite relevant today and could be linked to day- to-day situations and circumstances.

The subjects picked up by the colleges were quite relevant today and could be linked to day-to-day situations and circumstances. Some of the issues, such as teen love, youth unemployed and parental pressure were tactfully handled by the institutions.
All the artistes on stage gave fine performances, and the inborn talents of the teenagers could be vividly seen in every act and rendition. All the participants put in their best efforts and it was clearly seen on stage.
Except for Carmel College of Arts, Science & Commerce for Women, Nuvem, which is an exclusive women’s college, the other colleges had participants solely from their student community. The women’s colleges, however, were permitted to rope in male staff so as to put up a better show.
Overall, it was a good initiative on the part of TAG to tap and showcase raw talent on stage by organising such competitions at the college level. It will definitely help the youth grow with their talents as well as gain an entry to the commercial stage.
