The highly-anticipated 'Matiechem Fest' is back, and it’s going to be bigger and better than before. Join the fun on October 2, 2024 at Pilerne, starting at 10 am, as 'Matiechem Fest 3.0' kicks off.
This year’s theme, 'Amchi Mati Amcho Avaz,' emphasizes land conversions and the urgent need to protect our beloved land and traditional occupations, while safeguarding the environment.
A resident of Pilerne, Mrs Fernandes says, “The Matiechem Fest is a breath of fresh air. It’s a festival where you don’t feel like a spectator, but are a part of something big – a vibrant, living tradition that brings us all closer to Goa and Goan culture.”
Matiechem Fest is about people coming together as they prepare floats, practice group dances, live music, prepare traditional food and much more.
There's a flurry of activity as the young and the old in each vaddo are busy getting set for the festivities, showcasing that Goan traditions are very much alive.
Fr Derick Fernandes, parish priest of the Pilerne Church says, “Matiechem Fest isn’t just a celebration of our heritage, it’s a celebration of our community. Seeing people from different faiths and villages come together to celebrate like a family has been one of the most rewarding of experiences.”
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THIS YEAR'S FEST
1. Culinary delights: For foodies, who love or want to try out some mouth-watering home-cooked Goan cuisine, traditional sweets and refreshing beverages, Matiechem Fest is the place to be.
Some of the delicacies on the menu that you can look forward to are local boiled rice, Sambharchi Kodi, Pumpkin Verdure, Vonn, fried fish and more.
2. Eco-friendly practices: Just as in previous years, this year too the team has continued to follow the policy of a zero-waste fest. For this reason, people who are visiting are requested to bring their own cutlery along, which will help minimise plastic waste and keep the environment clean.
The festivities will begin with a heritage walk, followed by the display of vibrant floats that celebrate Amchi Xettam (our fields), Amchi Tollim (our ponds), Amcheo Zori (our springs), Amcheo Agor (our salt pans), and Balcaochi Gozalli.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music from the Derepent band among other things.
To keep the event at zero waste, people are requested to bring their own cutlery, which will help minimize plastic waste and keep the environment clean.
Under the guidance of Fr Derick and the enthusiastic parishioners of St John The Baptist Church, the event promises to showcase the incredible talents and creativity of the community.
