'Dhabari Quruvi' is the first film in the history of Indian cinema to have only people from indigenous communities starring in it. The film is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Priyanandan. The film also stands out for being shot completely in the tribal language of Irula.
'Dhabari Quruvi' means “a sparrow with an unknown father” in Irula. The mythological bird, which is part of tribal folklore, captures the untold tales of the unseen people who suffer quietly and yearn to break the shackles of injustice, whose agonies and struggles the film seeks to bring to light.
The actors starring in the film were selected from an acting workshop which was conducted at Attappadi. The workshop had an attendance of around 150 people. Meenakshi, Shyamini, Anuprasobhini and Muruki play the main roles in the film, and the cast also includes Nanjiyamma, the tribal woman from Attappady who got the 68th National Film Award for Best Female Singer last year.
The film has bagged the URF world record for being the only feature film starring tribal people exclusively and has also been selected for the International Film Festival of Kerala.
