To commemorate the International Year of Millets, WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa, is organising a seminar and competition, titled ‘Magic of Millets’, for rural women's self-help groups (SHG) in Goa on April 19, 2023 at the Directorate of Art & Culture, Patto, Panjim, Goa.

This is a joint initiative along with the Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission (GSRLM) and the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera.

Speaking on the occasion, State President, WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa, Mini Ribeiro, said, “The idea behind organising this seminar and competition, for rural women's SHGs in Goa, is to spread awareness about the importance of millets in our daily diets and to encourage more women to cook with these at home."

"This is part of our key focus areas of community outreach in the spirit of knowledge-sharing and building inspiration towards empowering women. Through this seminar, we hope to enable the women SHGs to spread the message of millets in Goa's villages and get more homes to start using these for better health," she said.

Sessions on ‘The Importance of Millets in Our Diet’ by Sunetra Talaulikar, ICAR- KVK, North Goa and ‘My Journey as an Entrepreneur working with Millets’ by Sucheta Bhandare, founder, Earth Poorna will be conducted.

There will also be a competition (for the women SHGs) on the best cooked dish using millets, for which prizes will be awarded by the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera.

CEO, Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission (GSRLM), Bhushan K Savaikar, spoke about the benefits of millets and said, Millets are synonymous with healthy eating, and thus, this awareness programme will enable the SHGs to connect to their roots, when they would cook healthy meals with millets such as nachni, bajra, jowar."

President, Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, Raghavendra Shetiya, said, "The seminar on ‘Magic of Millets’ for women's self help groups will help popularise the use of millets in rural households through their involvement. It will also help in training them to use millets in products which can be sold, and can be a source of livelihood for them.”
