From a typist to a copywriter to a successful cartoonist, Alexyz's life journey is a bright spot on Goa's art and cultural map.

There's no one in Goa who hasn't heard of Alexyz, whose cartoons in the local media have always captured the essence of Goan life and spirit, striking a chord with the local community.

Originally known as Alex Raphael Fernandes, he takes the name of Alexyz from the 1964 Greek movie, Zorba The Greek.

While working in Bombay (now Mumbai) as a copywriter, his friends thought Alex resembled the jovial character of Alexis Zorba, the lead actor in the movie, and started calling him by this name.

However, Alex, later tweaked Alexis to Alexyz and to date goes by this monicker.

And ever since then, and 50 years later, the name Alexyz has echoed through art galleries in India and abroad, where the talented cartoonist has featured his works garnering numerous admirers and fans.

MOMENT OF PRIDE: Cartoonist Alexyz poses for a photo with British Prime Minister John Major in 1999, the year he exhibited his cartoons in the House of Commons on the invitation of Goan-origin MP Keith Vaz.

During these years, the cartoonist has exhibited his works internationally in countries like Kuwait, UAE, Portugal, England, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

This Friday, August 9, some of the admirers and fans of the cartoonist are converging at his abode at Regina Terrace in Siolim at 4 pm to celebrate his works and life.

Non-governmental organisation (NGO), GOACAN, has voluntarily decided to organise this event as a befitting tribute to the proud son of the soil under its signature programme called Friday Balcao, the fortnightly discussion event.

Alexyz's Siolim abode, Regina Terrace, which can easily accommodate 30 to 40 people, will see 20 of the cartoonists' works on display, where those gathered will get to interact with the cartoonist.

LEGENDS: Alexyz with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Goa's professional photographer Prasad Pankar and a priest from Pilar Fr Noel Menezes will speak on the cartoonist's life and his works.

Alexyz will also be part of a seed-bombing programme at the SFX school nearby on Friday morning.

The cartoonist opines both seeds and humans possess inherent potential. A seed has the potential to grow into a magnificent tree, while a human has the potential to achieve great things, he believes.

Everyday, upon waking up, the cartoonist embraces the mantra, 'Life is the best party I've been invited to'.

Alexyz, who is Goa's celebrated cartoonist, will soon reach a remarkable milestone as he celebrates his 80th birthday on October 24, this year.

The event on August 9 holds special significance, serving as a precursor to the grand birthday celebration. It will be an occasion of joy, reflection, and of honouring the inspiring life of the cartoonist.

CLASSIC: Alexyz's cartoons connect with audiences across generations.
