Museum of Goa (MOG), Pilerne, presents an exclusive reading of the Spotlight Monologues on October 27, 2023 at the museum premises.

The Spotlight Monologues was added by Eve Ensler in the 10th edition of the Vagina Monologues so as to highlight the continued abuse against women worldwide. In her introduction to the 10th anniversary edition of her book, published in September 2007, Ensler wrote:

“We have broken through many barriers, we have changed the landscape of the dialogue, we have reclaimed our stories and our voices, but we have not yet unraveled or deconstructed the inherent cultural underpinnings and causes of violence. We have not penetrated the mindset that, somewhere in every single culture, gives permission to violence, expects violence, waits for violence, and instigates violence. We have not stopped teaching boys to deny being afraid, doubtful, needy, sorrowful, vulnerable, open, tender and compassionate.

“We have not yet made violence against women abnormal, extraordinary, unacceptable. We have not cracked the tectonic plate at the centre of the human psyche that is more terrified to love than to kill.

“It is the culture that has to change – the beliefs, the underlying story and the behaviour of the culture.”

In the book, women from Mexico, Japan, Pakistan, Native American women, transwomen, etc tell their stories of pain and anguish, suffered through mental, emotional and physical abuse.

The abuse against women must stop, says the author, “Women are not some marginalized insignificant group. We are more than half of the world’s citizens. What happens to us determines everything.”

CREATING AWARENESS, BRINGING CHANGE

Many children come from homes where abuse is rampant – be it a young girl who is raped or beaten by her family members, or married off at a young age to an equally abusive (sometimes older) spouse, or is made to work in unsafe areas under dangerous conditions.

Outreach Goa, an NGO, seeks to give such children a different perspective and a better life.

The NGO, started by Rob Lyon nearly 2 decades ago, has been working with children from the poorer sections in Goa. It also impacts the boys who come to them for assistance, helping them understand that girls/women need to be respected and protected, and not exploited and abused.

The NGO is helping countless children with the opportunity of a decent education, routine medical check-ups, basic health care, and mind and body enhancing extra-curricular activities that keep them off the streets.

In order to lend a voice to the goals of Goa Outreach, a group of empowered, local women have decided to stage the Spotlight Monologues in the shared belief that ‘Education and prevention is better than a cure.’
