Goa-based art and culture group, Dhaee Aakhar Goa, in association with Krishnadas Shama State Central Library, Panjim, will commemorate the 143rd birth anniversary of renowned Hindi writer, Munshi Premchand, on July 31, 2023.
On the occasion, there will be a reading of his short story, Sadgati, at the library. The story will be narrated by Ramita Gurav and Mamata Verlekar.
SOME BACKGROUND
Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, better known by his pen name, Premchand, was one of the most famous writers of modern Hindustani literature. A celebrated writer and pioneer of Hindi and Urdu fiction, he was one of the first authors to write about caste and the plight of women and labourers in Indian society in the 1880s.
Premchand published his first collection of short stories in Soz-e-Watan in 1907. He also has over a dozen novels, around 300 short stories, several essays and translations (of foreign literary works into Hindi) to his credit.
Dhaee Aakhar is a confluence of writers, poets and academics working in experimental theatre, literature and music.
Ramita Gurav, an associate Hindi professor at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, holds a PhD in Contemporary Hindi Theatre. She has presented literature and theatre, and has translated short stories by Konkani writer and Jnanpith awardee, Damodar Mauzo.
Mamata Verlekar holds a Master's degree in Hindi and is a Hindi Assistant Professor at the Shenoi Geombab School of Languages and Literature, Goa University.
