Right from those melodious lullabies your mum sang as she snuggled you closer, to tuning into that heartbreak playlist as it poured outside the bus window, music has always been what a feeling would sound like.
And, that feeling is completely heightened when your favourite music artistes perform live, sending across an electrifying energy, making everybody groove to the beat and sing those memorised lyrics, and for an instant, just letting you have fun.
Bringing this same exhilarating vibe as they take to the stage in Goa this May, the Bootleg Bee Gees (tribute band) is set to take fans on that trip down memory lane and have them dance to the famous disco tunes that are favourites even today.
Even if Bee Gees doesn’t ring a bell (somebody’s living under the rock!), the group’s music is something that needs no introduction. You’ve definitely shaken a leg to Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive… or felt every word of Words.
“I began singing Bee Gees songs at home with my two brothers for fun,” says David Wright, member of the Bootleg Bee Gees speaking about how the tribute band came to be.
Formed in 1956, the original Bee Gees band was made up of the Gibb brothers – Barry, Robin and Maurice – and were a renowned musical group during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and known as ‘The Disco Kings’.
David says it’s been over 25 years since the (tribute) band was formed.
“Eventually, we began performing on stage as a group, playing all kinds of music, but a special section of the show was a Bee Gees medley of songs such as Massachussetts, and I've Gotta Get a Message to You. This eventually developed into a full Bee Gees show,” he shares.
Apart from David, who plays the role of Barry Gibb, the group also has Andreas Jensen, who portrays Robin Gibb.
“The man wearing the hat and playing keys is Derek Cunningham who plays the role of Maurice Gibb. And, sitting behind the drums and keeping us all in time is Adam Rich. Our own guitar hero is Guy Hart,” David introduces the members.
The group is headed to India for their The Staying Alive Concert, that’s presented by Neil Ribeiro International and will be touring Goa, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. Their Goa show is being organised by El Camino Events.
On May 1, 2024, the band will perform at Gawin’s in South Goa, and the following day, will head to North Goa to perform at Kala Academy, Panjim.
Right from ’60s classics like Words and To Love Somebody, to the ’70s hits from Saturday Night Fever, the band is ready to captivate fans of the Brothers Gibb.
Derek says, “The band will be playing all the greatest hits of the Brothers Gibb, and even those famous songs written by the Bee Gees and made famous by other singers, such as Chain Reaction (Diana Ross), Islands in the Stream (Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton) and Grease (Frankie Valli).”
Their India Tour is being exclusively managed by Goa-based Neil Ribeiro International Events and Concepts.
After successful shows in the UK, Andreas reveals he has toured India before and loved it. So, he is very excited to return, while Derek shares the same excitement, having visited the country years ago.
We're really looking forward to meeting the groovy people of Goa.David Wright, member of the Bootleg Bee Gees.
However for David, it will be a completely new experience. “This will be my first time in India. So I'm really looking forward to visiting, performing and making new friends.”
About performing in Goa, David adds excitedly, “We're really looking forward to meeting the groovy people of Goa. We've heard that they are really funky, and could be the greatest dancers in all of India. So, we can't wait to see their John Travolta moves when we play Saturday Night Fever!”
According to Andreas, it’s tunes like Stayin’ Alive that get the audience right on their feet. So, if you’re a big fan of the Bee Gees or would love to be one, or simply enjoy great music, then you know exactly where to be.
