People are always looking at new and interesting ways to celebrate their birthdays, and Alexyz takes you down a different path as he turns 80.
In a unique celebration, Goa's famous cartoonist, Alexyz, is throwing open an exhibition and celebration at Art Chamber – Galeria de Belas Artes in Calangute, which kicks off today and will continue till October 15, 2024.
Alexyz says. “This is not only a celebration of my 80 years, but a celebration of my friends coming together to make it special.” He adds that all the events that have been planned are taking place thanks to his friends who have made it possible.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
In addition to showcasing Alexyz’ collection of 40 years of cartoons, the celebration will feature 70 framed artworks, and the screening of a documentary about him.
At the exhibition, apart from his artwork, the work of a few more artists will be seen. Alexyz informs, “I am a mentor to a few young, budding cartoonists who will also showcase their works at my exhibition.”
Not only will visitors get the opportunity to see his work, but they will also get a chance to interact with him.
Kicking off today, October 5, 2024, the brass band of Xavier de Moira (Paklo) will throw open the festivities, followed by a piano recital by pop pianist, Linda Diniz.
The event will culminate in a jam session, which promises to be a fun experience for those present. Alexyz states, “It’s always a fun time when I am surrounded by my friends. Whether I can sing or not, I have composed two songs that I will be singing.”
A variety of interesting events will take place throughout the 10-day celebration, ranging from competitions to exhibitions to musical performances, all united by a common thread of humour.

The exhibition will open, and visitors get to meet Goa’s living legend in the run-up to his 80th birthday on October 24, 2024.

International singing star, Lulu Fortes, is set to elevate the atmosphere at the celebration with a special performance at 4.30 pm.
In addition, there will be a documentary screening on Konkani Tiatr, directed by cinematographer Nalini Elvino de Sousa. Plus, get ready for an exciting demo of Cantaram played on vintage vinyl gramophone records, curated by Leaxan Freitas.

The exhibition welcomes anyone interested in mingling or chatting with Alexyz, and appreciating his displayed work.

A special documentary titled Alexyz – The Multicoloured Cartoonist will be presented by UK cinematographer, Kurt Fernandes, who, as Alexyz shares, “happens to be the son of a close friend of mine.”
This documentary screening will be at 5.20 pm followed by a vibrant drum circle session at 6 pm by Zappy Arthur Fernandes from Siolim.

On the occasion of World Goa Day, the celebration will begin at 10.30 am with an ingenious flower arrangement demo by noted landscaper and floral designer, Daniel Dsouza, followed by a sale of nursery plants from 10 am to 8 pm.
Goa's Marius Festakar Fernandes will present a vibrant show at the ‘Festa De Goa’ celebration, starting at 4 pm. The lighting of the lamp will be followed by a variety of activities, including Konkani songs, Kottecho Nach, bolkanvamcher gozalli as well as workshops on patolleo and rotessao.
Book-lovers can check out the sale of Konkani books, and those who love plants can participate in a medical plant workshop by the Dean of the Goa Agriculture College, Dr Suresh Kunkalicar.

Yet more fun! Join a banana and papaya eating competition starting at 5 pm — bring your own fruits (judged by weight). Additionally, there will be a sale of nursery plants from 10 am to 8 pm.
October 15, 2024
On the final day of the celebration, there will be grand finale of the Alexyz exhibition, featuring a first-of-its-kind Humour in Photography competition and exhibition by Prasad Pankar, starting at 10.30 am.
At 4 pm, there will be a competition for traditional, homemade sweet dishes. After that, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to prance, and sway with danseuse, Cecille Rodrigues.
