At FabLabShow, know science behind Beckham's curvy shots

The FabLabShow, a science stage show and football fundraiser, is conceptualised to entertain and inspire a love of science in children

Do you know the science behind bending it like Beckham? Could there be physics involved? Well, this is how the American Physical Society explains the science behind the deadly curves shot by England’s soccer hero, David Beckham: Both the Magnus force and the wake deflection force tend to push the ball in the same direction, and the two forces combine to lead to the impressive curves produced by skilled players like Beckham.

The unique part of the 60- to 90-minute FabLabShow is it is led by a host (Prateek) and a robot who is the co-host.

While many of us have seen Beckham torment his opposition with his killer curvy shots, the science behind the trick has certainly eluded many. Now, the FabLabShow, a travelling science stage show to be held in Goa, uncovers the mystery behind Beckham’s bends.

The upcoming live science show in Goa at the Ravindra Bhavan in Margao on October 7 from 7.47 pm to 9 pm is a fundraiser for a local football club – Futebol Club YFA (FC YFA).

Once the show starts rolling, realisation dawns that knowledge knows no bounds.

FabLabShow was conceptualised by Deepak Pathania and is hosted by Prateek Dhruva. Deepak and Pratheek’s main objective is to make science fun and create curiosity among children between 8 and 16 years through this stage show.

While Pathania is a compulsive inventor with a hands-on approach, Prateek is a storyteller at heart, who hosts the show, and both have been combining creatively to inspire young minds since 2017.

The show is is a fundraiser for a local football club – Futebol Club YFA (FC YFA).

The core team of FabLabShow decided to bring the show back from Mumbai to Goa to do a fundraiser in Margao where the proceeds of the tickets (minus the cost of doing the show) would be given to FC YFA.

FC YFA is a youth futsal and football club that was started around 12 years ago by Coach Socorro Vaz and is now managed by Joshuah (also the coach of the Indian national futsal team) and Charlton Vaz.

The main objective of the show is to make science fun and arouse the curiosity of children.

It’s a club that has mentored Moksh and Vardaan, teenage kids of Pathania, the creator of the show. Pathania has seen FC YFA nurture his kids since the last decade and numerous others to help them reach a higher level in the game.

Most of the boys are in the mainstream sub-junior teams of ISL and I-League. The club is now playing in the first division with two teams (U-13 and U-15) in the GFA (Goa Football Association) State League and is self-funded.

The show helps people to discover a world of possibilities.

Pathania says playing 30 matches in each age group across the state is a financial struggle for the team and that led to the thought of the fundraiser.

The organisers have urged the public to support the show in any of the four ways: Buy tickets to come to the show; donate tickets for charities (some people have bought bulk tickets to be given to NGOs for underprivileged kids); buy a donor pass for self or gift it to someone or an NGO (reserved seats assured) and share it with people with kids who will also want to support either innovation in science education or football or both.

FabLabShow is a high energy, funny, quirky and immensely interactive stage show.

The unique part of the 60- to 90-minute FabLabShow is it is led by a host (Prateek) and a robot who is the co-host. The show covers five to seven science principles and uses demos, presentations, videos, graphic explanations, and innovative large exhibits/structures to explain them.
